In Wireless Sensor Network, clustering presents an important way to prolong the network lifetime. Energy consumption of sensor nodes can be reduced on electing the best nodes as Cluster Heads, and dividing the network into clusters. In this paper we introduce a novel clustering mechanism for Wireless Sensor Network which considers the residual energy and the density of the nodes to elect the Cluster Heads. The Base Station provides each sensor node with its neighbor’s information. Then each node makes its proper decision during the comparison phase. The network is partitioned into clusters considering the neighboring distances, where each CH invites a set of the nearest nodes to be affected as its cluster’s member. Once clusters are created, CHs gathers the data, and sends them to the Base Station. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm reduces the energy consumption of the sensor nodes, and achieves an improvement of the network lifetime.
