It is well-known that technology use in inverted classrooms, otherwise known as ‘flipped classrooms’,offers benefits or advantages for English learners over traditional instruction models, the author in this paper holds the view that it is necessary and significant to do an empirical research on technology application for learning English in flipped classrooms, including both ESL courses in Hongkong and EFL courses in Mainland China. The concept of ‘flipped classrooms’ originated from Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams in Woodland Park High School of Colorado in 2007,U.S.A. A flipped classroom provides opportunities for increased oral production and negotiation of meaning in English from both classmates and their instructors. The research has investigated the opinions of a ‘flipped classroom approach’ towards English language teaching in two different language contexts, i.e., an ESL classroom in Hongkong and an EFL classroom in Mainland China.Survey data were then analyzed to explore the implementation of this approach and technology use in second and foreign language classrooms.General opinions toward learning English using a flipped classrooms were positive.Training and practice of teachers, however,is needed for effective use on technology application for learning English in both ESL classrooms in Hongkong and EFL classrooms in mainland China as well.
