Curriculum Design for Education Concentrations from the Perspective of Needs Analysis: Students' Perceptions and Actual Practice

This primary research examines the linear value to study curriculum design for ESP from the perspective of Needs Analysis in an application-oriented university in order to understand how the current design and its implementation are perceived by students and provide suggestions for better course development. All teaching plans, course outlines and syllabuses of Pedagogical Concentration are studied with opinions of all the undergraduates investigated through a 40 items’ questionnaire survey based on Needs Analysis and curriculum design models including an open-ended item.

It is revealed that (a) courses students find effective are not ones they find enjoyable, the perception of which is significantly related to teaching method, teacher and degree of student-centered; (b) students are most satisfied with communicative courses on speaking and listening courses and least satisfied with traditional courses on writing and reading; (c) their perceptions on the medium of instruction and textbook conflict with the actual use and course design; and (d) micro-teaching opportunity, smaller classes, earlier concentration-specialized and linguistics courses and diversified assessment method are expected. Merits and drawbacks of the curriculum design are discussed with implications and suggestions for future design.
