Attending international academic conference is of great importance for doctoral students. In international academic conferences, presenters often use PowerPoint as an aid to present their papers which serves as a good deal of utilization of the combination of image and text and can transmit thesis content effectively. The studies on the PowerPoint of Chinese doctoral students’ simulated international conference presentation are very rare. Based on Martinec and Salway’s image-text relation as its theoretical framework, the current research is designed to conduct a multimodal discourse analysis to the presentation PowerPoint of Chinese doctoral students, with focus on the relations between images and text used in the PowerPoint. The research adopts both quantitative and qualitative methods. It aims to unravel the challenges upon students in choosing the images for their presentations’ PowerPoint making. What is more, the status and logico-semantic relations of the image and text is also explored by analyzing the image-text relations in the PowerPoint. The practical significance of the study mainly lies on the implication for students on their class presentations’ PowerPoint production. And, it contributes to the theoretical expansion of study on multimodal analysis of image-text relations.
