Referring to the requirements of China’s Standards of English (CSE), this paper points out some drawbacks of former researches relevant to college English textbooks, one of which is that little attention was paid to the unique characteristics of private colleges. Therefore, the present study applies to the survey and face-to-face interviews based on experimenting questionnaires to check the link between English teaching in the high school and the private college. Analyzing the data of the survey and interview materials, the study discusses the serviceability of college English textbooks in private colleges given that those textbooks were composed for all students in all levels of universities and colleges without considering the respective difficulty of students in private colleges. Besides, the necessity of ESP textbooks is verified. Hence, some suggestions are given for the design of private college English textbooks, such as the ESP textbooks with the school-running features of the private colleges, and the three-dimensional teaching materials taking the advantages of Internet Plus era, etc.
