CBI, short for content based instruction, is an approach which integrates completely the theme content or academic content with language teaching activities in second language teaching, aiming to equip students with the content area of the subject matter and simultaneously increase their language skills. Since it was named in the mid-1980s, CBI has received extensive attention from scholars at home and abroad (Mohan, 1986; Krahnke, 1987; Stryker & Leaver, 1997;CHANG Junyue, 2015 etc.). 6T’s approach under CBI provides a flexible method to second language teaching, including theme, text, topic, thread, task and transition. This paper attempts to discuss the application of 6T’s approach to Introduction to Business English. After several semesters’ experiments, this course has formed 6 themes and related 14 topics, with a variety of relevant texts leads to topic selection. Specific tasks are designed to teach the language knowledge and content information central to the texts for a given theme. Transitions and threads create additional linkages throughout the curriculum, creating a sense of coherence and seamlessness. It is hoped that this approach could help cultivate students’ business knowledge through English teaching and develop language skills during the process.
