English for Specific Purposes (ESP) has become one of the main approaches to language teaching, as it is directed towards the specific needs of the particular specialty people. Athletes in China are well-served that they have their own education program with specially designed English textbooks. The purpose of this study was to find out how Athletics English, the textbooks for athletes of Chinese Athletics National Teams, have been developed according to the principles of ESP textbook design and whether ESP textbook design meets the needs of the athletes of Chinese Athletics National Teams. In this study, two instruments were used. First, a needs analysis questionnaire for the athletes to find out their needs, lack and wants. The second tool was ESP textbooks used by athletes, evaluated for their appropriateness to the specific needs of athletes. The results were analyzed and the findings showed that the Athletics English used by the athletes were compiled in accordance with the specific needs of athletes and they may motivate and facilitate athletes’ English learning.
