Under tropical conditions, we observed failure rate of Gas Insulating Switchgear (GIS) over twice the value reported by the 3rd CIGRE survey of 2007. Therefore, to mitigate the failure in the future, it is important for the asset manager to get the condition status of GIS in his network, correctly and concisely. To that purpose, a Health Index model (HI model) for GIS operating under tropical conditions has been proposed in this paper.
The model has the foundation on the condition assessment of subsystems of components in GIS. The condition parameters were obtained from the Routine Visual Inspection (RVI) and the Diagnostic Test and Measurements (DM) on GIS. The measured parameters were translated into the health score based on a set of “norms”.
The output of the model consists of three scores, namely: 1) the Dominant score, which determines the condition of the three critical subsystems in GIS in tropics; 2) the Non-dominant score, which determines the condition of the less critical subsystems in GIS; and 3) the Surge arrester readiness score.
