In order to investigate the effect of the addition of different morphologies of zinc oxide (ZnO) on the electrical properties of the polymer. In this paper, low density polyethylene (LDPE) was used as a matrix material, spherical and needle zinc oxide were added to LDPE respectively, and composite material were prepared by a two-step method. The effect of different morphologies of zinc oxide on the breakdown properties of polyethylene was discussed, at the same time, different morphologies of zinc oxide were measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The experimental results show that the breakdown field strength of polyethylene is greatly improved by adding Nano-Sphere ZnO in the same content compared with Micro-Needle ZnO. The breakdown field strength of Nano-Sphere composites is the highest, 128.7 kV/mm, 10.9% higher than that of LDPE. The breakdown field strength of Micro-Needle composites is the lowest, 18.8% lower than that of LDPE, and DSC results show that the crystallization of Nano-Sphere composites is relatively perfect compared with that of Micro-Needle composites.
