Biomass as renewable energy with CO2 neutral has a reasonable prospect of development and application. Under the condition of anaerobic and medium temperature, biomass can be converted into higher value-added chemicals such as coke, combustible gases, and bio-oils through rapid pyrolysis. Biomass is usually extruded into particles to increase the energy density, as well as combustion characteristics, and biomass particles are easy to store and transport. In this paper, a drop tube furnace combined with an online mass spectrometer was used to determine the pyrolysis characteristics releasing properties of gaseous products of two biomass particles: BP (bark pellet) and PP (pine pellet). The activation energy of the primary gaseous products was calculated, and the different properties and the mechanism were discussed.
