Efficient production of glycols from biomass-derived platform molecules over Cu-based nanocomposites catalysts

Developing new methods and routes for converting biomass and its platform compounds into fuels and chemicals is of great importance to the sustainable development of our society. Aimed at the efficient utilization of biomass, studies on the synthesis of glycols by clean catalytic conversion of biomass-derived platform molecules such as polyols, furfuryl alcohol (furfural) and γ-lactone were conducted. Highly dispersed Cu-SiO2 nanocomposite catalyst was synthesized for the efficient production of propylene glycol by selective hydrogenolysis of glycerol. Based on the understanding of the hydrogenolysis mechanism of high carbon polyols, nano-Cu/SiO2-Ca(OH)2 bifunctional catalyst system was designed for the efficient hydrogenolysis of lignocellulose-derived xylitol to ethylene glycol and propylene glycol, and high combined glycol yield of 70% was obtained at milder reaction conditions of 200 ℃ and 6 MPa. The reaction is found to depend sensitively on Cu particle size. By further constructing of Cu-Ni-SiO2 bimetallic catalyst, forming highly efficient and stable CuNi nano alloy, the combined glycol yield was promoted up to above 80%. Nano Cu-Mg3AlO4.5 bifunctional catalysts with hydrotalcite precursor structure were synthesized for the hydrogenolysis of the C–O bond in the furan ring of furfuryl alcohol (furfural) to produce 1,2-pentanediol (1,2-PeD) and 1,5-pentanediol (1,5-PeD). PeDs with yield of up to 80% was attained due to the cooperative catalysis of highly dispersed metallic Cu (particles < 2 nm) and basic Mg3AlO4.5. In addition, 1,4-Butanediol with yield up to 95% was achieved over core−shell CuCo bimetallic nanoparticles with a Co-rich core and Cu-rich shell under mild conditions.
