Precise measurement and control of temperature in a diamond anvil cell with resistive heating

In high-temperature and high-pressure experiments based on diamond anvil cell (DAC), sample temperature usually is obtained by measuring the temperature of diamond side. However, getting an accurate sample temperature is difficult for the uncertainty of temperature difference between sample area and diamond side in the heat equilibrium. Here we have designed a temperature measurement and control system, in which the pressure of sample is controlled through the DAC and the temperature of sample is controlled by an external resistive heating furnace. A heat reflecting device with a double-layer structure is added to wrap the DAC, which can reserve the most of heat in the device because of the multiple heat reflection of metal sleeves and the good heat insulation of air layer. Using this system can effectively reduce the temperature gradient in the cell and the fluctuation of temperature difference, and we can obtain the precise sample temperature with quite small error. X-ray diffraction patterns and X-ray absorption spectra of Bismuth under high temperature and high pressure were successfully measured on synchrotron radiation source using the temperature measurement and control system.
