Application of Low Temperature Multiple Effect Desalination Technique in Power Plant

Desalination can provide a mean of increasing the supply of fresh water. In the face of climate change and the water needs from a growing population, the lack of freshwater has become a greater world concern, and the use of seawater through desalination has increased in importance. Thermal distillation plants are usually combined with power plants where steam, used to drive turbines generating electricity, is available to provide thermal energy to evaporate seawater in the desalination process. To integrate with desalination, a power plant can not only meet its own demand on fresh water, but can also provide fresh water for municipal, agricultural or industrial purposes. In the paper, the most common methods of desalination are introduced. Among them, Low Temperature Multiple Effect Distillation (LT-MED) technology which is suitable for combined with power plant has been widely researched and developed in China. The technical crux of LT- MED desalination will be introduced, such as: efficient heat transfer, material selection and corrosion control, discharging non-condensed gas, avoiding scaling, produced water quality , etc. Furthermore two demonstration LT-MED projects which have been built in Hebei Guohua Cangdong Power Plant are introduced.
