The production of sewage sludge is increasing with the development of residential, commercial and industrial establishments. It must be disposed harmlessly as it contains a wide range of harmful substances such as heavy metal, pathogenic bacteria and parasite and so on. One of the best ways to dispose it is burning it with industrial burners. However, it is necessary to dewater beforehand as its high water content restricts its disposal in practice. An investigation was conducted on the drying process of digested sludge from a meat processing factory in Anshan. Two kinds of samples were collected on site with different water contents from its sewage treatment plant which includes physical, chemical and biological processes to remove contaminants and produce environmentally safe wastewater. This study on the sewage sludge was performed in the lab to investigate the influence of temperatures and freeze and thaw (F-T) conditioning. It is found that the higher the drying temperature, the greater the dewatering rate of raw samples is, while the pretreatment of freeze and thaw can weaken the impact of temperature. The results also suggest that it is beneficial to dewater with freeze and thaw condition in removing the free water between microstructure.
