The three-phase short circuit fault on the AC side of the MMC will affect the operating characteristics of converter seriously, even threaten the safe operation of the flexible DC system. By analyzing the operating principle of the converter under different control modes, which are constant DC voltage control, constant power control and droop control, the characteristics of electrical quantities of AC and DC side of the converter are studied when the MMC occurs three-phase short circuit fault on the AC side. The influence of three-phase short circuit fault on the electrical quantity and power output characteristics of the converter under different control modes is analyzed. The model is built in PSCAD/EMTDC to simulate and verify the analysis results.
