Aiming at the transient overvoltage of the sending-end grid caused by commutation failure (CF) of HVDC system, a transient overvoltage suppression control method based on reactive power control of rectifier station is proposed. The dynamic characteristics of reactive power at rectifier station side during CF and the mechanism of transient overvoltage in sending-end grid are analyzed. According to the reactive power control equation at the AC side of rectifier station, the dynamic relationship between triggering angle and AC-side voltage of rectifier station are established. On this basis, a transient overvoltage controller based on reactive power control of rectifier station is designed. The simulation results show that the trigger angle of rectifier station can be dynamically adjusted according to the transient overvoltage value through the proposed control method to suppress the overvoltage of sending-end grid.
