Heterogeneity of “doing the month” and its correlation with postpartum depression

Objective: To investigate the heterogeneity of the content and compliance of “doing the month”, and its association with postpartum depression. Methods: Convenience sampling was conducted in three hospitals from January to February 2016 542 women around 42 days postpartum were included. A questionnaire designed by the investigators was used to examine the content and compliance of “doing the month” and to analyze their correlation with the occurrence of postpartum depression. Results: 98% of the women in the puerperal period (n=531) had been “doing the month”, but there were differences in the content and compliance of “doing the month”. The highest compliance related to diet and the lowest compliance was on hygiene. High behavioral compliance was associated with a reduced risk of postpartum depression, OR( 95%CI)=0.283 (0.124,0.648). The Low mood during “doing the month” is associated with a higher risk of postpartum depression, OR (95%CI)= 5.016(3.407,8.148). Conclusion: “doing the month” remains an almost universal behavior, but the content of “doing the month” varies among individuals, which is also reflected in its relationship with postpartum depression. Future studies should pay attention to the heterogeneity of “doing the month” and compliance and their differential effects on health.
