This is an interdisciplinary study to apply a business management model to College English teaching. Conceptual framework Importance-performance analysis (IPA) is based on a set of multi-attribute and expectancy-value models. IPA model is a strategic approach to measure users’ satisfaction and identify the strengths and the areas of improvement. Using IPA model to assess college English teaching allows an intuitive assessment of teaching method/activities operation and the implementation of appropriate recommendations for improvement. This research used the Stratified Random Sampling Method and selected 300 students from Beijing Institute of Technology Zhuhai. By first ascertaining the importance that students assign to the most relevant attributes of College English course and subsequently evaluating the performance of each attributes, the result is presented in a graph with four quadrants: Keep up the good work, Concentrate here, Low priority, and Possible overkill. By conducting the survey, this study aimed to evaluate and identify the major strengths and weaknesses of a courses’ key success factors, hence to discover the underlying mechanism of students’ English learning motivations and expectancies, and provide some insights to the improvements of class design, as well as teaching reform in College English.
