To reduce the magnet usage, this paper focuses on the comparative study of consequent-pole permanent magnet vernier (CP-PMV) machines with SPM and IPM, referred to as the CP-SPMV and CP-IPMV machines, respectively. Performance including back-EMF and torque density with different pole ratios is comprehensively investigated. In addition, the analytical models of the proposed machines are built based on the simple magneto-motive-force permeance method, to investigate harmonic components of the airgap flux density and the back-EMF. Through finite element analysis (FEA) and analytical models, several PMV machines with the same dimension restriction but different rotor types and pole ratios are designed and compared. According to the comparison, the torque density of CP-IPMV machines with spoke-array magnets and alternative flux bridges is the maximum, while the torque per unit magnet volume of the CP-SPMV machine is the largest. Finally, two SPMV machines with CP and RP pole types are prototyped and tested to validate the theoretical and FEA analyses.
