Electrical tree characteristics dependent on crystallization process of iPP/POE blend insulation

Purpose/Aim
Compared with cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), polypropylene (PP) has higher working temperature, better insulation performance and can be recycled, which is considered to be a substitution of XLPE insulation. This work focuses on the effect of cooling methods during crystallization on the AC electrical tree growth characteristics in iPP/POE blend insulation.
Experimental/Modeling methods
The cooling rate of iPP/POE blend insulation is 10, 5 and 2.5 ℃/min, and the crystallization morphology is characterized by polarized optical microscopy (POM). The melting enthalpy of the iPP/POE blend insulation is measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) test. Dumbbell shaped specimen is stamped for tensile test with a length of 75 mm, a width of 12.5 mm, and a thickness of 1 mm. The AC voltage of electrical tree experiment is set to 8kV, and the photos electrical tree of samples were taken by the charge coupled device (CCD) lens and saved in the computer for later analysis.
Results/discussion
The breakdown strength of iPP/POE blend insulation and the electrical tree initial voltage elevates with the cooling rates increase from 2.5 to 10 ℃/min.
The breakdown strength and electrical tree initial voltage of non-isothermal crystallization samples are higher than isothermal samples.
Conclusions
The spherulite size declines and the interface density of spherulites increases which introduces more deep traps. It is concluded that cooling rate can reduce the spherulite size of PP and then improve the electrical performance of PP cable insulation.
