Red mud is one of the bulk solid wastes, with strong alkalinity and complex composition. The long-term storage of red mud not only occupies a large amount of land resources, but also easily causes damage to soil, groundwater, atmosphere and surrounding environment, and seriously causes ecological (geological) disasters, and its resource utilization has always been a worldwide problem. However, red mud has the advantages of porous structure, large specific surface area and high activity, and is also rich in Si, Ca and a variety of valuable metals, which make it a secondary resource with high economic value used in the field of building materials, environmental remediation and metallurgy. At present, it is mainly used to prepare building bricks, ceramic products, cement, concrete, composite materials and other building materials products and adsorbents, flocculants, soil amendments, fertilizers and other environmental remediation products, as well as to recover iron, titanium, scandium, rare earth elements and other valuable metals. This paper reviews the research status of red mud resource utilization technology at home and abroad in recent decades, especially the research progress in red mud resource utilization in China. In order to provide some useful explorations and suggestions for the reduction and high value utilization of red mud in China.
