摘要
The ongoing ocean acidification is projected to affect marine phytoplankton, their community structure, and function. Despite this, how small-phytoplankton-driven primary production in the (ultra)oligotrophic ocean will respond to OA, is still poorly understood. Here we conducted 47 onboard microcosm experiments across the western North Pacific. Vary-extent but consistent decreases in primary production after OA were observed in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre and the northern South China Sea, the negative OA effects switched to no changes in the northern transition zone. Changes in small eukaryotic phytoplankton abundance after OA appeared to drive the changes in overall primary production. Experimental evidence further indicates that the varied OA impacts on primary production are closely related to the variability of nutrient supply and temperature across our study area. Our study provides the first basin-scale evidence in supporting the widespread decline in primary production in the (sub)tropical (ultra)oligotrophic oceans, upon the rising atmospheric CO2.
