The traditional methods of mine surveying involve using total stations and GPS to gather data on the location and shape of mine workings. However, these methods can be time-consuming and labor-intensive, and may not provide the level of accuracy required for modern mining operations. In recent years, new technologies such as 3D laser scanning and drone photogrammetry have emerged as promising alternatives for mine surveying. This paper presents a study on the integration of 3D laser scanning and drone photogrammetry for improved accuracy in mine surveying. The study was conducted at an underground mine in Western Australia, where the traditional surveying methods were compared to the new technologies. The 3D laser scanner was used to create point clouds of the underground mine workings, which were then processed to create 3D models of the mine. The drone was used to capture high-resolution aerial images of the mine, which were processed to create a digital surface model (DSM) of the mine. The point cloud data and DSM data were then integrated using software to create a highly accurate 3D model of the mine. The results of the study show that the integrated approach using 3D laser scanning and drone photogrammetry provides a significant improvement in the accuracy of mine surveying. The 3D model created using the integrated approach was found to be accurate to within a few centimeters, whereas the traditional surveying methods were accurate to within a few meters. The study also found that the new technologies are faster and more efficient than traditional surveying methods, with the 3D laser scanner and drone able to capture data much more quickly than a total station or GPS. This means that mine surveying can be completed in a shorter amount of time, allowing mining operations to resume more quickly. Overall, the study demonstrates the potential of integrating 3D laser scanning and drone photogrammetry for improved accuracy and efficiency in mine surveying. The new technologies offer a range of benefits for mining operations, including faster and more accurate data capture, improved safety, and reduced costs. As such, it is expected that these technologies will become increasingly important in the mining industry in the years to come.
