Blood clotting caused by Covid-19 has made this disease much more severe than other respiratory diseases. An alarming number of Covid-19 patients developed blood clots that trigger heart attack, stroke, and other disasters. Currently blood thinner medicines are the only treatment. While blood thinners lower the blood’s ability to clot, they cannot disassemble existing blood clots. Many patients were not helped by them. Here we report our finding: Magneto-rheology (MR) can disassemble blood clots safely and effectively. This is attributed to the magnetic property of red cells and their unique disk shape. Blood clots are aggregates of red blood cells along their disk surfaces. Inside the blood clots, red cells are deoxygenated because they unable to catch oxygen. When we apply a strong magnetic field to blood clots, red cells are polarized along their disk diameter direction. In a strong magnetic field, red cells will thus tilt to make their disk surface parallel to the magnetic field.  Each red cell obtains an induced dipole moment parallel to the applied magnetic field. As in blood clots the red cells stack on top of each other, the interaction between the neighboring magnetic dipoles is strongly repulsive, proportional to. If B reaches 3T, this force is capable to lift a red cell in vacuum. Of course, the cell-cell binding in newly formed blood clots will not be so strong. In fact, with a magnetic field of 1.3 T, this repulsive force is strong enough to break the toughest blood clots, rouleaux.  Hence, we have proposed a new MR treatment for Covid-19 patients with thrombosis: applying a strong magnetic field along the patients’ arm or leg. When the blood clots come to the magnetic field, red cells are polarized and disassembled safely; the released red cells recover their oxygen function; the blood viscosity along the flow direction is reduced, turbulence in blood circulation is suppressed, and the incidence of heart attack and stroke can be prevented. With the thrombosis all occurring in Covid-19 patients, the magnetic treatment will resolve this urgent issue and greatly help the patients to recover.
