Coastal reservoirs are innovative technologies designed to collect freshwater resources and alleviate water pressure in coastal areas. However, the complex topographic conditions at their bottoms can significantly affect the water-salt exchange mechanisms and the quality of freshwater in the reservoir area. Research on the impact of bottom slope on water-salt transport in coastal reservoirs remains limited. This study investigates the effect of bottom slope on the salinization process in the reservoir area through a combination of indoor experiments and numerical simulations. The results indicate that an increased bottom slope in coastal reservoirs not only enhances seawater intrusion but also increases the contact area with bottom sediments. This facilitates the formation of salt stratification in the reservoir and leads to the development of a more stable salt aggregation area at the bottom. Consequently, the amount of salt exchange between the water body and the aquifer is altered. This study advances our understanding of how to improve water quality during reservoir operation and provides a scientific basis and theoretical foundation for the efficient management and operation of coastal reservoirs.
