The Three Gorges Reservoir, a critical national strategic freshwater reserve and a significant component of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, plays a pivotal role in the contemporary trajectory of the Chinese nation's rejuvenation. As the Three Gorges Project transitions from the completion phase to its normal operational phase, Hubei Province, home to the Three Gorges Hub Project, emerges as a pivotal region for ensuring the project's operational integrity and safety. It carries a profound political and territorial responsibility for the enduring safe operation of the Three Gorges Project. In this context, reinforcing research into the integrated and coordinated development of water resources, along with strategic countermeasures within the Three Gorges reservoir area, is of paramount importance. This paper conducts a comprehensive review of existing literature, meticulously examining the current state of water environment management in the Hubei reservoir area. It identifies and analyzes the challenges associated with water environment protection and, in response to the imperatives of future high-quality development, proposes a suite of countermeasures for the comprehensive advancement of the water environment. These recommendations are intended to enhance the strategic reserve capacity of this vital national freshwater resource and to contribute to the construction of a modern water infrastructure network for the nation.
