Study on the Swimming Abilitiy of Typical Stream Fish in Zhejiang and its Application in Fishway Design

The study focused on the swimming capacity of three typical stream fish species in Zhejiang: Acrossocheilus fasciatus, Distoechodon tumirostris, and Xenocypris davidi. Using a circular flume experimental setup, the researchers tested and analyzed the swimming abilities of these fish with varying body lengths. The addition of fishways to the dams provided theoretical references for restoring connectivity in river segments for stream fish habitats and protecting fishery resources.Results showed that the average induced flow velocity for the studied fish was 0.1 m/s. The critical swimming speed ranged from 0.37 to 0.92 m/s, while the burst swimming speed varied from 0.51 to 1.20 m/s. There was a weak positive correlation between the induced flow velocity, critical swimming speed, and burst swimming speed of the tested fish and their body length.Based on these findings, it is suggested that the flow rate at the entry point of the newly added fishway should be between 0.19 and 0.55 m/s. The flow rate within the fish passage facilities should be controlled at 1.0 m/s for the high-speed zone, and the mainstream flow rate in the resting pool should be maintained between 0.1 and 0.9 m/s.
