Response of periphyton fatty acids to experimental changes in aqueous phosphorus

摘要
  1. Periphyton is an important basal food source for many aquatic consumers by directly or indirectly providing long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA). Despite the fact that periphyton LC-PUFA content is very sensitive to aquepus nutrients, many prior studies were conducted in low nutrient rivers, while less is known about how periphyton LC-PUFA content may change in response to higher nutrient variation in eutrophic rivers.
  2. We conducted a periphyton culturing experiment by manipulating a gradient of aquepus nutrient concentrations from 0.002 to 0.18 mg P/L to investigate how aquepus nutrients affect periphyton fatty acids (FA) profiles from oligotrophic to eutrophic waters .
  3. Our results showed a significant curvilinear regressions relationship between aquepus nutrients and periphyton FA content. In oligotrophic conditions, periphyton LC-PUFA increased as aquepus nutrients increased, whereas in eutrophic waters, periphyton LC-PUFA decreased as aquepus nutrients increased. The tipping point of the effect of aquepus nutrients on periphyton LC-PUFA was predicted at 0.1 mg P/L. Variation in periphyton PUFA (EPA, ALA and LIN) were positively correlated with the density of alge, respectively diatoms, chlorophytes and cyanobacteria, which may be one of the reasons leading to variations in periphyton FA.
  4. Further, periphyton biomass experienced a significant increase with elevated aquepus nutrients, which was different to the relationship between periphyton LC-PUFA and aquepus nutrients. It was reflected the relative importance of food quality and food quality for aquatic consumers under different water nutrient conditions.
  5. Our study detected the response of periphyton FA to aquepus nutrients from oligotrophic to eutrophic conditions, and predicted  tipping point provides a reference for the protection of aquatic consumers. Our results highlight that periphyton food quality should be considered in the future conservation of river food webs.
