Predicting the nutrient concentrations in the north Pacific derived from the relationships between water mass and nutrient concentrations

摘要
Nutrients play a crucial role in determining the productivity of marine ecosystems. Spatiotemporal variations of nutrients in the North Pacific are critical for understanding ecosystem dynamics, influencing marine food webs, and determining the health and productivity of this vast ocean region.. However, we have little known about it. The World Ocean Atlas (WOA) is one of the well-known nutrient data set, which however performs not well in the north Pacific.
Here, we establish an algorithm that based on the relationships between water mass indexed by temperature and salinity and nutrient concentrations from field measurements in the North Pacific. Applying this relationship, we further predict the nutrient concentrations in the north Pacific based on the temperature and salinity data collected from World Ocean database (WOD), which increase the nutrient data by three orders of magnitude as compared to the initial nutrient data collected from Field measurements. The prediction errors for nitrate, phosphate and silicate are 2.0, 0.5, and 3.0 umol/L. This data set can help to understand the climatology and interannual variations of nutrients in the Pacific.
