PEO technology for surface multi-functions of light alloys

This work presents the recent process of PEO technology developed in our group with the aim of surface multi-functions of light alloys. By designing specific electrolytes and optimizing the plasma discharge processed, we have realized the surface functions of light alloys towards diverse applications. Especially, extensive efforts have focused on the electrical isolating coatings of Al and Ti-based alloys, and the maximum breakdown voltage of Al alloys has been improved from 500V to 5000V through the integration of PEO methods with other technology. This enables much more broad applications of Al-based electronics in extremely critical conditions in comparison with conventional organic isolating coatings, which can not work at the temperature exceeding 300oC. In addition, we also developed series of PEO technologies for gas catalysis, anti-bacterial coating, metal surface colouring etc and these technologies have been widely used in industries.
