Effect of bias on microstructure and tribological properties of AlCrMoN coatings by multi-arc ion plating

AlCrN coating has been widely used in cutting tools because of its excellent high-temperature performance and chemical inertness. Mo element has been paid more attention because of its alloying ability to improve the hardness and wear resistance of hard coatings. The research on the performance optimization of hard coatings has important scientific research value and application significance. In this study, AlCrMoN coatings with four different bias voltages were prepared by multi-arc ion plating, and the effects of bias on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and tribological properties of the coatings were studied. The bias is adjusted to -80V, -100V, -120V, and -140V, and the resulting coatings are face-centered cubic structures. The AlCrMoN coating showed an increase in hardness and a decrease in coefficient of friction corresponding to the change in bias, and the coating prepared at -120V had both the best performance, reaching 36.2GPa and 0.4, and it also had the best performance in scratch tests. Mo element reduces friction by forming a self-lubricating layer containing Mo, and has a good performance in reducing friction under appropriate bias conditions. The performance is optimized with the increase of bias pressure. When the bias pressure is too high, the ion sputtering energy is too high, resulting in a decrease in coating thickness and a change in crystal growth mode, resulting in a deterioration of performance.
