Shock Compression of Pre-Compressed Water: Towards the 300 K Isotherm with a Novel Diamond Anvil Cell

The equation of state (EOS) of water under extreme conditions is a cornerstone of planetary science, shedding light on the interiors of ice-rich exoplanets and giant planets. In this work, the twelve-beams of the GXII facility at the Institute of Laser Engineering in Osaka were used at the at the HIPER (High-Intensity Plasma Experimental Research) chamber to drive a shock into precompressed water.  We used an innovative design for diamond anvil cells (DAC) including a perforated diamond which can allow reaching higher precompressions. In our experiment, we achieved precompressions between 1.7 and 4 GPa corresponding to ice phases VI and VII.

Our results show how this technical advancement potentially enables potential access to compression curves approaching the H2O cold curve (T = 300 K).

2D hydro-radiative simulations of the laser-plasma interaction within the diamond conical perforation show that if the perforation is too narrow, the plasma stagnates within the cavity, which inhibits the generation of a high-pressure shock wave in the diamond.
