Thermal performance analysis of serpentine cooling runners for IGBT modules

This study analyzes the thermal-hydraulic performance of three serpentine cooling runners (full-fin, spaced-fin, and finless) at coolant flow rates from 0.5 to 0.8 m/s, focusing on heat dissipation for high power density IGBT modules. Key parameters such as Tmax, ∆T, Nu, friction coefficient (f), and pressure drop (∆P) were evaluated through experiments and simulations. The full-finned runner shows the best thermal performance, with Tmax decreasing from 336.7 K to 327.2 K and Nu increasing by 72.5%, but a significant pressure drop of 12.37 kPa. The spaced-finned runner performs second, while the finless runner has the lowest flow resistance but the weakest heat dissipation. PEC analysis shows the full-finned runner’s Nu is 1.47 and 2.13 times higher than the other two, but its friction factor increases significantly, highlighting the trade-off between heat dissipation and pressure drop. The study suggests optimizing the full-finned runner design through heat transfer-flow synergy for high-power IGBT thermal management.
