Stress-Optimized Lighting for Laying Hens via Patrol Robots

To mitigate stress in laying hens caused by conventional inspection lighting, Zhejiang University researchers developed a robotic supplemental lighting system using optimized color temperatures. This method reduces stress biomarkers while maintaining egg production, enhancing intensive poultry farming efficiency.Patrol robots equipped with 6500K (cool white) and 2700K (warm white) LEDs (20 lx intensity) deliver two 2-3-second daily irradiations at 10:00 and 16:00 (20 cm/s speed). Stress levels are assessed via serum biomarkers: glutamine (Gln), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and corticosterone (CORT).After 21 days, 6500K lighting reduced Gln by 13.2% (P<0.01), SOD by 23.0% (P<0.0001), and CORT by 33.4% (P<0.001) compared to 2700K, confirming superior stress reduction. Egg production remained stable, ensuring no trade-off between welfare and productivity.The study establishes a mechanistic link between 6500K lighting and stress reduction, offering an automated, energy-efficient solution. By minimizing human intervention and epidemic risks, the technology improves farm management and animal welfare, scalable to diverse poultry systems.
