Portable Olfactory Visual Colorimetric Sensing Equipment for Rapid Identification and Detection of Key Environmental Factors in Laying Hen Farming

In the process of large-scale livestock and poultry farming, the current environmental monitoring system is still mainly focused on conventional gases such as ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), carbon dioxide (CO2) and temperature and humidity, but lacks monitoring of potential harmful factors such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and microorganisms. Therefore, key environmental factors in laying hen farming cannot be fully and effectively evaluated, which leads to insufficient production safety regulation, lack of animal welfare, lagging dual carbon monitoring, and unsatisfactory production efficiency. Accordingly, based on the needs of multi-index collaborative analysis, a portable harmful factor rapid sensing equipment was developed, which integrates three functional modules: commercial gas sensors, functionalized paper-based VOCs colorimetric sensor chips, and microbial aerosol collection, for the detection of multiple harmful factors in poultry houses. The functionalized paper-based VOCs colorimetric sensor chip uses pre-selected chemical responsive dyes to respond to multiple VOCs, realizing total VOCs detection in poultry houses. The integration of commercial NH3, H2S, CO2, temperature and humidity sensors enhance the applicability of the equipment in monitoring a variety of harmful factors. The pre-prepared magnetic bead solution specifically adsorbs the target microorganisms to achieve effective collection of microbial aerosols. Ultimately, the development of portable rapid sensing equipment for harmful factors provides an efficient and flexible solution for safe production, environmental monitoring, efficiency assurance, and public health in laying hen farming.
