Design and application of litter area in large cage aviary unit system

Litter can satisfy the pecking, scratching and dustbathing behaviour of hens, thus enhancing animal welfare. However, the application of litter in the new large cage aviary unit (LCAU) system developed by China Agricultural University is limited due to the negative impacts of using litter on the health of laying hens and the indoor environment, and the management problems such as the litter being dispersed by the birds and the difficulty in timely suppling litter. In this study, the litter box and the litter distribution system for LCAU were designed and the effects of the box heights of 10cm, 20cm and 30cm were evaluated. Results showed that the litter box had no significant effect on the morbidity, dirty egg and ammonia concentration. However, the TSP concentration increased significantly when the litter box was in use. Moreover, the box height is proportional to the retention time of the litter. It was concluded that the litter box designed in this study can enhance the welfare of laying hens, and reduce the difficulty of litter management.
