Ammonia emission from livestock production threatens nature areas, while methane largely contributes to climate change, therefore these emissions should be reduced. In the Netherlands innovative systems at commercial pig farms were tested that mitigate these emissions. The source oriented innovative systems are based on one or more of the following principles: - frequent and complete removal of manure (flushing, scraping, belt); - separation of urine and faeces; - cooling of manure; - dilution of manure; - optimizing indoor climate (e.g. cooling in summer); - reducing the emitting area.

Measurement campaigns have been performed and are still running. From two systems full results have been obtained: 1) houses for weaned piglets and fattening pigs with reduced emitting area and daily flushing of manure within gutters; 2) bedded housing system for weaned piglets with reduced emitting area, separation of urine and faeces on a V-shaped floor underneath the slats with urine gutter and scraper.

The system with daily flushing in fattening pigs showed emission reductions of 45% for ammonia and 91% for methane, while for weaned piglets reductions were found of 86% for ammonia and 95% for methane. Preliminary results in the bedded housing system showed emission reductions of 70% for ammonia and 95% for methane.

It is concluded that by a combination of housing measures and manure management a high reduction of ammonia and methane can be achieved. The advantage of this source-based approach is that the indoor air quality is also improved.
