3D Reconstruction and Body Scale Measurement of Poultry Based on Point-Nerf

In poultry breeding and raising, body size measurement is very tedious and prone to cause stress in poultry. Nowadays, there is an urgent need for an efficient and animal-friendly measurement method. In this study, a non-contact 3D volumetric measurement technique is proposed for 3D modeling of poultry using a point cloud-driven neural radiation field (Point-NeRF). First, multi-viewpoint matching is performed to compute depth camera poses from video-extracted image sequences. Then, multi-resolution hash coding and neural active distance function (SDF) are used for fine surface reconstruction. Finally, for accurate volume calculation, Poisson reconstruction and local triangulation are used as specific post-processing techniques to form a closed envelope around the surface boundary of the poultry. The measurement validity of the method was verified by two experiments performed on a sample of 10 poultry for poultry breeding. The results show confirmation that the proposed method exhibits a high degree of fidelity to actual poultry. The coefficient of variation was lower than 0.05 for five measurements on the same poultry, showing high reproducibility. Comparison of the method with manual measurements revealed errors within 2%, proving the reliability of the method. This innovative method provides a reliable and efficient low-cost solution for non-contact poultry volumetric measurements, highlighting its potential to improve poultry breeding through accurate volumetric data.
