Using U-I collaborative patent data derived from USPTO, this article compares the U-I collaboration patterns, U-I collaborative quality, and the relationship between them in three East Asian countries -Japan, South Korea, and China. The results show that: First of all, Japanese and South Korean U-I collaboration follows the path from LU-LC collaboration to LC-IU collaboration, and then to LU-IC collaboration, in which companies hold a leading post. While Chinese U-I collaboration follows the path from LU-LC collaboration to LU-IC collaboration, and lacking the pattern of LC-IU collaboration. Chinese companies play a far lesser role in U-I collaboration; Secondly, U-I collaborative quality of Japan is much higher than that of South Korea and China; Finally, international U-I collaborative quality of the sample countries is much higher than local U-I collaborative quality. So international U-I collaboration has significantly positive effects on U-I collaborative quality.
