This paper analyses channel traffic and number of channels required for Satellite Mobile Radio Talk-group (SMRT) service. SMRT service facilitates the communication between various terminal users, during emergency scenarios, by making use of a geo-stationary satellite and Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) band. A vital issue in design of SMRT multi-group service is to aid co-ordination between various terminal users engaged in conversation. The terminal users are registered in groups at the time of commissioning and the channel allocation is done on the basis of the groups. SMRT multi-group service makes use of two types of channels: signaling channel which is shared by all groups and voice communication channels which are assigned to individual groups by making use of Demand Assigned Multiple Access (DAMA). Multi-group characteristics differ from single-group; hence a new G-DAMA (Group-DAMA) scheme is devised and discussed in paper. Traffic engineering and queuing theory are applied to calculate optimum number of terminal users which SMRT service can cater on the basis of parameters such as blocking probability, queue size and channel capacity. This paper further investigates the effects of increased traffic intensity on signaling channel and probe the number of voice channels which are required for SMRT multi-group service.
