Effect of green mud on mechanical properties of concrete

Papermaking industry annually produces a large amount of solid waste, green mud, which is mainly composed of calcium carbonate along with other complex components, and a practical and effective approach for disposing green mud is urgently needed. Using green mud in producing concrete is a promising solution. From the perspective of low carbon economy, this investigation proposed to utilize green mud as a partial replacement of fine aggregate in concrete mixes. Different amount of green mud were incorporated in concrete mixes of different targeted strengths. Experiments were carried out to assess the effect of green mud on the workability and the compressive strength of the concrete materials at different ages. The results showed that with concrete mixes containing optimized content of green mud showed desirable performance. This study not only provided feasible solution to utilize green mud but also reduced the economic cost and environmental impact of concrete production.
