Abstract - Controlled switching (CS) can inhibit surge and overvoltage in switching operation transient, therefor reducing equipment damage and improving power quality. While the CS technology has been applied, some challenges in practice remain yet, preventing large scale application of the technology. Considering the dielectric and mechanical characters of controlled switching in a compensation line, this paper establishes an EMTP- ATP model of a substation. The key of this work is setting up a circuit breaker module considering dielectric and mechanical characteristics. The optimal controlled switching strategies are proposed through simulation, meanwhile the effect of chopping current and series reactance on controlled opening is analyzed. And simulations validate that a high precision of operation time of CS can improve the compensation line parameters significantly, even can eliminate the series reactor, closing resistors and auxiliary chambers, which reduces costs a lot.
