Simulation of Surface Charge Effect on DC Flashover Characteristics of GIS Insulator

A model to predict the critical flashover voltage of insulator was applied on the cylindrical insulator, with a diameter of 15mm and height of 10mm, in SF6 to analyze its flashover performance. This model is based on the electric field numerical calculation and the criteria for streamer inception, propagation and sustenance. Simulation results was compared to the experiment conducted under the same circumstances as simulation. The results showed that the critical flashover voltage estimated through this model has a maximum deviation of 11.2%. Moreover, the DC flashover characteristics of GIS insulator was analyzed using this method. A parametric study was performed to investigate the influences of polarity and distribution of surface charge on flashover voltage.
