EAGE Asia Pacific is pleased to announce a Breakfast Talk featuring Prof. Dr. Tariq Alkhalifah, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and Dr. Troy Thompson, DownUnder GeoSolutions.
Tariq AlkhalifahTitle: What does it take to Illuminate the Earth at all Scales?
Presenter: Prof. Dr. Tariq Alkhalifah, Professor of Geophysics, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST)
Abstract: Learn about advancing knowledge in enhancing the computational tools that allows us to utilise recorded seismic data to delineate the Earth at all scales. This includes taking the more accurate, but complex, physics into consideration in waveform inversion, as well as, utilising additional information in our data including the often-ignored multi‐scattered energy. Our innovative tools applied to active and passive seismic data have resulted in improved images of the subsurface. In this presentation, Dr. Tariq will share results that demonstrate the usefulness of these tools.
Troy ThompsonTitle: Helping Depth Conversion with Full Waveform Inversion – a Case Study
Presenter: Dr. Troy Thompson, ‎Principal Geophysicist, DownUnder GeoSolutions
Abstract: Horizontal drilling for development of thin reservoirs requires seismic depth conversion to be more accurate than the bed thickness, which may be of the order of 2% of depth or less. In the presence of a heterogeneous overburden, traveltime tomography may not sufficiently resolve lateral velocity variations which can cause depth ‘busts’ in the underlying image. Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) provides model resolution to half a seismic wavelength or better, which in turn provides an accurate, data driven velocity model with reliable depth conversion accuracy away from the wells.
