Third International Congress on Biological Invasions (ICBI), 19-23 November 2017, Hangzhou, China

On behalf of the International Organizing Committee (IOC), we are delighted to invite you to participate in the 3rd International Congress on Biological Invasions (ICBI).

The first and second ICBIs were held in China’s Fuzhou (2-6 November 2009) and Qingdao (23-27 October 2013) cities in response to the global challenges posed by Invasive Alien Species (IAS). “Overwhelming success” was achieved in both events with over 1000 participants from more than 50 countries in attendance and exchanging ideas on the latest research and practice. The ICBI has since become a quadrennial event.

As recommended by the International Expert Committee, it is proposed to hold the 3rd ICBI on 19-23 November, 2017, in Hangzhou, China. The theme of the congress is ‘Building capacity to manage biological invasions and facilitate trade’. It will be jointly sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Zhejiang University and CAB International, in partnership with 20 other scientific institutes from around the world. The congress will focus on IAS management research challenges at national, regional and international levels, on facilitating capacity building for IAS management among developing countries, and on removing barriers to accelerating regional and international trade. The congress will provide a platform for the exchange of new research and tracking of technical innovation among participants from different backgrounds and countries. Additionally, it will also address cutting-edge research topics such as big data, genomics and climate change.  

With a history going back 2,200 years, Hangzhou was one of China’s seven ancient capitals and today is the capital city of Zhejiang Province on the east coast of China. The city is renowned as a Paradise on Earth due to its beautiful natural scenery, with two UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the West Lake and the Grand Canal - and rich culture.
