The centromere is the chromosomal locus where the kinetochore is assembled and spindle attachment and movement occurs during cell division. Understanding centromere structure and organization will deepen our knowledge of basic principles of cell division, Mendelian inheritance, and speciation. Defining the molecular aspects of centromere function is relevant for treating and preventing human birth defects and disease.
The GRC in Centromere Biology welcomes participants from across the globe, working in both classical genetic model organisms and non-traditional experimental systems. The inaugural 2014 Centromere Biology GRC, held at Bentley University (Waltham, MA), was met with enthusiasm as an event where centromere biologists could share their research progress and trainees could interact meaningfully with established investigators.
The 2016 Centromere Biology GRC will include experts presenting cutting-edge advances in cell imaging, structural biology, genetics, biochemistry, genomics, and chromatin biology focused on a common interest in centromere organization and dynamics. The Centromere Biology GRC aims to bring together those working in several highly relevant areas in the centromere field, some of which are often under-represented at other chromosome and centromere meetings. Such topics include, but are not limited to: genomics, comparative analyses, synthetic biology, and biophysics. The meeting is intended to create a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere for junior scientists and trainees to present their work and exchange ideas through poster sessions and informal discussions. Short talks in each session will include those chosen from poster abstracts.
The 2016 conference will emphasize studies on centromere structure and dynamics, centromeric chromatin organization, and biophysical properties of centromeres. The collegial atmosphere of this Conference, combined with session discussions, informal gatherings in afternoons and evenings, and events to promote interactions between trainees and established investigator, will provide an opportunity for scientists to build collaborations and unite areas of expertise to push the field forward in new, innovative directions.
